Just days & dollars away from launching LAX at CSM!

UPDATE: The College of Southern Maryland is $670 away from launching men's and women's lacrosse programs. The goal of the CSM Foundation has been to raise $25,000 in order to field the two teams, and as soon as the final donations come in, the college can register its lacrosse programs with the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association. That means CSM's men's team can be playing at Division I level with the NJCAA as soon as spring 2014 and women, spring 2015.

The CSM Foundation is looking for generous donations: any and all donations will get CSM that much closer to registering its teams and hiring a coach ~ to be in on making this happen, donations can be made online directly here ( https://foundation.csmd.edu/sslpage.aspx?pid=354  )

New! College Athletics Eligibility & Recruiting Webinars

High school student athletes have the opportunity to view an online presentation relating to the college athletics recruiting process. The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) is providing a new nonprofit service designed to assist families in being informed and educated about college athletics eligibility and recruiting. The webinar is available at no cost, and can be accessed via MPSSAA.org by going to: http://www.mpssaa.org/CollegeEligibilityRecruitingWebinars.asp

MPSSAA Executive Director Ned Sparks said of the webinar launch, “We are happy to provide this informational program to our student-athletes and their families at no cost. We highly encourage anyone who has aspirations of playing sports in college to watch this webinar. It is an outstanding first step in properly educating parents and students about the recruiting process.”

The MPSSAA recruiting webinar, which can also be accessed by clicking on the “Recruiting Webinar” button just below the menu on the left hand side of the MPSSAA.org home page, addresses these and other recruiting topics:
  • Three rules of being a parent
  • Scholarship myths and facts
  • National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and Junior College education
  • Scholarships, do they differ?
  • The Name Game Negotiate/Cooperative Education
  • Dangers of social networking/cell phones
  • National Letter of Intent NCAA/NAIA
  • Eligibility Centers
  • NCAA core course requirements
“There is a misunderstanding that the recruiting process doesn’t start until a student’s junior or senior year," said Sparks. "Families and students who have aspirations of playing sports in college must begin to prepare themselves for the recruiting process starting in their freshman year of high school. MPSSAA highly recommends every parent of a student-athlete dedicate 60 minutes of time to watch our webinar. We feel it will go a long way to get our kids and families on the right track with recruiting, and more importantly, academics.”

CSM Explores Launch of Men’s, Women’s Lacrosse Programs

Old Line Bank supports CSM's LAX program
It’s face-off time as the College of Southern Maryland looks to launch lacrosse at the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) collegiate level in Southern Maryland. With lacrosse one of the fastest-growing sports and few options for college-bound high school athletes to play locally, bringing lacrosse to CSM will provide Southern Maryland students opportunities to continue academic and athletic careers close to home.

“Strong programs exist in Calvert and St. Mary’s county high schools, and now that lacrosse has expanded with Charles County teams moving into SMAC (Southern Maryland Athletic Conference) competition, the natural progression is to provide the opportunity for students to play at the collegiate level while attending community college in Southern Maryland,” said CSM’s Athletic Director Michelle Ruble. CSM would play at the Division I level of NJCAA.

Community support has been immediate. Joining the effort as an MVP, Old Line Bank is the first major sponsor, designating $10,000 to athletics towards the launch of lacrosse.

“Old Line is delighted to support athletics programs such as lacrosse at CSM. Sports bring people together and team sports help build leadership skills and a sense of working toward shared goals—traits that are so important to employers,” said Old Line Bank Executive Vice President Chris Rush.

“Good schools are centerpieces of a good community and we are happy to support CSM,” said The St. Charles Companies Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations Craig Renner, in presenting $1,500 to the lacrosse program from proceeds from the St. Charles Running Festival sponsored by Lennar, Chick-fil-A of Charles County and The St. Charles Companies.
Support from St. Charles Running Festival

Additionally, Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa has donated $2,000 to bring lacrosse to CSM.

“We have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of interest in the program and support from local families,” said Michelle Goodwin, vice president of advancement. “We set a fundraising goal of $50,000 to help get the program off the ground and have raised $12,500 so far.”

For every community dollar donated, the CSM Foundation will match up to $25,000, with inaugural year sponsorships available from $50 to $15,000.

“Once sufficient funds are raised, we will be able to move forward and hire a coaching staff. Our goal is to begin recruiting in 2013 in order to stand up a NJCAA men’s lacrosse team for the 2014 season, followed by recruiting and developing a women’s lacrosse team a year after that,” said Ruble.

Lacrosse is one of the nation’s fastest-growing team sports with more than 680,000 players participating, according to the 2011 U.S. Lacrosse Participation Survey. High school players topped 275,000 in 2011. Lacrosse is also expanding at the college level, with colleges throughout the U.S. adding programs: 30 new varsity programs in 2012 and 48 set to begin in 2013. Maryland ranks first among states with the most lacrosse players

2012 Spring Awards

With season's end comes the opportunity to celebrate excellence on the field, respect for the game, and an appreciation for fellow team members.

Recognized at the spring awards program with remarks by Coach Kris Bayer are the following players for their work on the field:

Unsung Hero: Jacob Fitch
He was matched up with the best midfielder from every team and although his long hair and physical style earned him some strange looks and more than his share of penalties, he also earned the respect of everyone he played against and threw in a goal and 4 assists to boot.

Most Improved: Chris Clark and David Brown
Chris dominated the faceoff X for us and helped control the tempo of many of our games with his ball possession and smart defense. He also won the biggest faceoff of the year against Calvert in our playoff to give us a chance to tie the game.

David went from asking halfway through the season what he could do to even get on the field to being the most dominant player on the grass against Calvert. His leadership and class will be sorely missed next season, especially for a kid who picked up a stick for the first time six months ago.

Outstanding Sportsmanship: Jake Bayer
HJake was the undisputed leader on a team full of talented upper-classmen. He carried himself with class and composure (except on the rare occasion that his dad had to remind him to calm down) all season.  We’re glad to get him back next year as much for his leadership as his scoring. Jake has been recognized as the US Lacrosse Academic All American for the Southern Maryland region.

MVP: Nathan Hupp
Nathan went from being the stringy kid who was kind of a throw-in on the first midfield line his freshman year, to the most dominant midfielder, if not player, in the county. Holding his own against the top players in SMAC, kids who have been playing this sport 9 and 10 years longer than him, he was third on the team with scoring and assists, but his clearing and ability to nearly always make the right play will be missed more than anything.

Way to go, Seniors: All Scholar Athletes!

Among the seniors recognized as Scholar Athletes and Minds in Motion during spring awards were, from left, Ben Marquis, Eric Martin, Coach Bayer, Nathan Hupp and Tyler Gill.
Off the field, the Warriors scored high marks academically this year. Our Scholar Athletes hit the 3.0 grade point average and above while the Minds in Motion scored 3.2 gpa or better.

Leading the way, every senior on this year's team achieved Scholar Athlete status. Congratulations to the following Varsity and Junior Varsity players for the accomplishments in the classroom:

A Winning Season!

Congratulations to our 2012 Varsity and Junior Varsity LAX Warriors, but especially to our seniors as they close out their season and last year of high school lacrosse.

La Plata Warriors wrap up an 8-6 winning season. Our seniors have stepped up to the challenge of SMAC over the past two years, and our Warriors have emerged strong. In the first four years of lacrosse at the high school level in Charles County, the La Plata Warriors lacrosse team has amassed a 35-14 record, establishing a respectable foundation for future teams. For that, each team player can be extremely proud.

Best wishes to all our graduating seniors!

X the Txt® during LAX high school finals

An impaired/distracted driving program from UNITE will bring together a high-tech simulator, impact video and a number of other resources to educate students about the dangers of texting while driving and impaired driving. The simulator allows students to experience, in a controlled environment, the potential consequences of distracted or impaired driving. Allstate will also bring the X the Txt® anti-distracted driving campaign to the event.

The simulator will be available from 3 to 9 p.m. May 22 at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Stadium, 1000 Hilltop Circle, Baltimore.

Alarming statistics:
  • Summer is the deadliest time of year for teen drivers and their passengers with 7 of the top 10 deadliest days of the year occurring between Memorial Day and Labor Day
  • An average of 422 teens die in traffic crashes during each of the deadly summer months as compared to a monthly average of 363 teen deaths during the non-summer months.
  • 2,417 people in Maryland have been killed in teen-related motor vehicle crashes since 1991.
  • 1 of the most commonly recognized driving distractions is cell phone use
  • About 89 percent of all Americans have a cell phone
  • Drivers under 20 years old have the highest proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Their lack of driving experience can contribute to critical misjudgments if they become distracted. Not surprisingly, they text more than any other age group and the numbers of young drivers who text is only increasing.
MPSSAA game times for the 2012 State Lacrosse Finals presented by PNC will be 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. May 22 and May 23. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online at www.mpssaa.org.
UNITE brings health and wellness programs to high school and college campuses across the nation. Their programs are designed to heighten awareness to the dangers and consequences of drunk driving and distracted driving. Their follow-up programs have a powerful impact on students to reinforce the subjects that schools and parents teach them daily.  www.dwiprevention.org

What is a Warrior?

Courage, above all things, is the first quality of a warrior.
Karl Von Clausewitz

Each Warrior wants to leave the mark of his will, his signature, on important acts he touches. This is not the voice of ego but of the human spirit, rising up and declaring that it has something to contribute to the solution of the hardest problems, no matter how vexing!
Pat Riley

Study strategy over the years and achieve the spirit of the warrior. Today is victory over yourself of yesterday; tomorrow is your victory over lesser men.
Miyamoto Musashi

"Warriors do not win victories by beating their heads against walls, but by overtaking the walls. Warriors jump over walls; they don’t demolish them."

"If a warrior is to succeed in anything, the success must come gently, with a great deal of effort but with no stress or obsession."

A warrior takes responsibility for his acts, for the most trivial of acts. An average man acts out his thoughts, and never takes responsibility for what he does.
~ Carlos Castaneda Quotes from A Separate Reality

There are lots of things a warrior can do at a certain time which he couldn't do years before. Those things themselves did not change; what changed was his idea of himself.
~ Carlos Castaneda Quotes from Tales of Power

Rob Oller commentary: Athletes run huge risks when using social media

Ohio State’s latest recruiting rhubarb sends a sad but necessary message to athletes: The best way to handle social media is to be unsocial, because one never knows where a Facebook post or Twitter tweet will lead.
In the case of OSU, a tweeted photograph led to an undeserved stain on the football program.

From NPR: The Power of Positive Perception

Can You Think Your Way To That Hole-In-One? http://wamu.org/programs/morning_edition/12/04/18/can_you_think_your_way_to_that_hole_in_one Listen to the entire report here: http://wamu.org/audio-player?nid=52279 Excerpts below:Psychologists at Purdue University have come up with an interesting twist on the old notion of the power of positive thinking. Call it the power of positive perception: They've shown that you may be able to improve your golf game by believing the hole you're aiming for is larger than it really is. Jessica Witt, who studies how perception and performance are related, decided to look at golf — specifically, how the appearance of the hole changes depending on whether you're playing well or poorly..... "These effects aren't specific to athletes," she says. "We find them in everybody, in all kinds of tasks. So if you have to walk up a hill to get to work, if you're tired or low energy or wearing a heavy backpack, that hill looks steeper or a distance looks farther. So it's apparent in everybody, not just in athletes." Witt says along with a positive perception comes confidence — if the hill doesn't seem too steep, or the golf hole appears bigger than it really is, that altered perception gives you confidence in your abilities. Tim Woodman, who heads the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science at Bangor University in Wales, says for athletes at least, just having more confidence doesn't guarantee top performance. He says that confidence is important, but self-doubt can help, too. "If you're good at something but you doubt yourself a little bit, you're more likely to try that bit harder," he says. "Whereas if you are confident and you know you're very good at something, you might just slack off a little bit and move into some sort of cruise control, and then actually not perform very well." Woodman says top athletes find the right balance between confidence and uncertainty to perform at their peak. Copyright 2012 National Public Radio. To see more, visit http://www.npr.org/.

Growth of College LAX

It's been four years since lacrosse came on the scene for Charles County's public schools, and the sport has been experiencing phenomenal growth locally and nationally. At the high school level, participation has more than doubled in the past decade. LaxPower has been documenting growth, which can be viewed here, and if you want to stay on top of who's the newest college to be launching a team, check out The Growth Blog here.
For instance, Elon College is the latest to announce the addition of women's lacrosse and Post University and  Monmouth University the latest to announce the addition of men's lacrosse teams.

"Since the early to mid '90s, the number of schools sponsoring women's lacrosse has grown sharply and has surpassed the number for men.  For men's lacrosse, the bulk of the growth has occurred in Division III, while for women's lacrosse, all three divisions (though especially Division III until the last few years) have enjoyed very positive growth rates." 5K Fun Run for 5K+ Fund Raiser

Nearly four years ago, Charles County introduced lacrosse into its high schools. In our first three seasons, the La Plata Varsity Boys Lacrosse Team amassed a record of 27 wins and 8 losses and two county championships. As we take our next step into the extremely competitive world of Maryland high school lacrosse, we are looking for help to take us to the next level.

On April 15, we will be holding the first of what will become an Alnnual Warriors Lacrosse 5K Run to raise money for our program. Details on the run, to be held on the Indian Head Rail Trail.

In exchange for a $200 donation, your logo will adorn the T-shirts that will be given to each participant, as well as prominently shown on a banner that will be displayed at all of our home games as well as here on the LPHS LAX blog.

Funds raised will help defray costs for training aids and equipment, upgraded uniforms and out-of-conference competitions that would normally not be possible.

We look forward to your partnership with our team. To do so, make your check payable to La Plata High School with “boys lacrosse” written in the memo, and email the logo you would like to be used to kbayer@charlescountylax.org.  If you have any questions, or need more information, please feel free to La Plata Boys Head Lacrosse Coach Kris Bayer, 301 643-2182 or bayer@charlescountylax.org

Love the Game!

Many thanks to Coach Bayer for passing this wisdom along ~ Love the game.

Love the game for the pure joy of accomplishment.

Love the game for everything it can teach you about yourself.

Love the game for the feeling of belonging to a group endeavoring to do its best.

Love the game for being involved in a team whose members can't wait to see you do your best.

Love the game for the challenge of working harder that you ever have at something and then harder than that.

Love the game because it takes all team members to give it life.

Love the game because at its best, the game tradition will include your contributions.

Love the game because you belong to a long line of fine athletes who have loved it. It is now your legacy.

Love the game so much that you will pass on your love of the game to another athlete who has seen your dedication, your work, your challenges, your triumphs...
and then that athlete will, because of you,

love the game.
