2012 Spring Awards

With season's end comes the opportunity to celebrate excellence on the field, respect for the game, and an appreciation for fellow team members.

Recognized at the spring awards program with remarks by Coach Kris Bayer are the following players for their work on the field:

Unsung Hero: Jacob Fitch
He was matched up with the best midfielder from every team and although his long hair and physical style earned him some strange looks and more than his share of penalties, he also earned the respect of everyone he played against and threw in a goal and 4 assists to boot.

Most Improved: Chris Clark and David Brown
Chris dominated the faceoff X for us and helped control the tempo of many of our games with his ball possession and smart defense. He also won the biggest faceoff of the year against Calvert in our playoff to give us a chance to tie the game.

David went from asking halfway through the season what he could do to even get on the field to being the most dominant player on the grass against Calvert. His leadership and class will be sorely missed next season, especially for a kid who picked up a stick for the first time six months ago.

Outstanding Sportsmanship: Jake Bayer
HJake was the undisputed leader on a team full of talented upper-classmen. He carried himself with class and composure (except on the rare occasion that his dad had to remind him to calm down) all season.  We’re glad to get him back next year as much for his leadership as his scoring. Jake has been recognized as the US Lacrosse Academic All American for the Southern Maryland region.

MVP: Nathan Hupp
Nathan went from being the stringy kid who was kind of a throw-in on the first midfield line his freshman year, to the most dominant midfielder, if not player, in the county. Holding his own against the top players in SMAC, kids who have been playing this sport 9 and 10 years longer than him, he was third on the team with scoring and assists, but his clearing and ability to nearly always make the right play will be missed more than anything.

Way to go, Seniors: All Scholar Athletes!

Among the seniors recognized as Scholar Athletes and Minds in Motion during spring awards were, from left, Ben Marquis, Eric Martin, Coach Bayer, Nathan Hupp and Tyler Gill.
Off the field, the Warriors scored high marks academically this year. Our Scholar Athletes hit the 3.0 grade point average and above while the Minds in Motion scored 3.2 gpa or better.

Leading the way, every senior on this year's team achieved Scholar Athlete status. Congratulations to the following Varsity and Junior Varsity players for the accomplishments in the classroom:

A Winning Season!

Congratulations to our 2012 Varsity and Junior Varsity LAX Warriors, but especially to our seniors as they close out their season and last year of high school lacrosse.

La Plata Warriors wrap up an 8-6 winning season. Our seniors have stepped up to the challenge of SMAC over the past two years, and our Warriors have emerged strong. In the first four years of lacrosse at the high school level in Charles County, the La Plata Warriors lacrosse team has amassed a 35-14 record, establishing a respectable foundation for future teams. For that, each team player can be extremely proud.

Best wishes to all our graduating seniors!

X the Txt® during LAX high school finals

An impaired/distracted driving program from UNITE will bring together a high-tech simulator, impact video and a number of other resources to educate students about the dangers of texting while driving and impaired driving. The simulator allows students to experience, in a controlled environment, the potential consequences of distracted or impaired driving. Allstate will also bring the X the Txt® anti-distracted driving campaign to the event.

The simulator will be available from 3 to 9 p.m. May 22 at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Stadium, 1000 Hilltop Circle, Baltimore.

Alarming statistics:
  • Summer is the deadliest time of year for teen drivers and their passengers with 7 of the top 10 deadliest days of the year occurring between Memorial Day and Labor Day
  • An average of 422 teens die in traffic crashes during each of the deadly summer months as compared to a monthly average of 363 teen deaths during the non-summer months.
  • 2,417 people in Maryland have been killed in teen-related motor vehicle crashes since 1991.
  • 1 of the most commonly recognized driving distractions is cell phone use
  • About 89 percent of all Americans have a cell phone
  • Drivers under 20 years old have the highest proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Their lack of driving experience can contribute to critical misjudgments if they become distracted. Not surprisingly, they text more than any other age group and the numbers of young drivers who text is only increasing.
MPSSAA game times for the 2012 State Lacrosse Finals presented by PNC will be 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. May 22 and May 23. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online at www.mpssaa.org.
UNITE brings health and wellness programs to high school and college campuses across the nation. Their programs are designed to heighten awareness to the dangers and consequences of drunk driving and distracted driving. Their follow-up programs have a powerful impact on students to reinforce the subjects that schools and parents teach them daily.  www.dwiprevention.org

What is a Warrior?

Courage, above all things, is the first quality of a warrior.
Karl Von Clausewitz

Each Warrior wants to leave the mark of his will, his signature, on important acts he touches. This is not the voice of ego but of the human spirit, rising up and declaring that it has something to contribute to the solution of the hardest problems, no matter how vexing!
Pat Riley

Study strategy over the years and achieve the spirit of the warrior. Today is victory over yourself of yesterday; tomorrow is your victory over lesser men.
Miyamoto Musashi

"Warriors do not win victories by beating their heads against walls, but by overtaking the walls. Warriors jump over walls; they don’t demolish them."

"If a warrior is to succeed in anything, the success must come gently, with a great deal of effort but with no stress or obsession."

A warrior takes responsibility for his acts, for the most trivial of acts. An average man acts out his thoughts, and never takes responsibility for what he does.
~ Carlos Castaneda Quotes from A Separate Reality

There are lots of things a warrior can do at a certain time which he couldn't do years before. Those things themselves did not change; what changed was his idea of himself.
~ Carlos Castaneda Quotes from Tales of Power

Rob Oller commentary: Athletes run huge risks when using social media

Ohio State’s latest recruiting rhubarb sends a sad but necessary message to athletes: The best way to handle social media is to be unsocial, because one never knows where a Facebook post or Twitter tweet will lead.
In the case of OSU, a tweeted photograph led to an undeserved stain on the football program.
